Aldeburgh Cinema Club
The Aldeburgh Cinema Club was set up in the 1970s with the main aim of providing support for Aldeburgh Cinema. At that time many cinemas in the UK were under threat and Aldeburgh people were determined that their Cinema would remain open. We are all grateful to them and are extremely lucky today to have a notable independent Cinema in Aldeburgh. The Cinema Board and the staff do a fantastic job ensuring that our Cinema is welcoming, comfortable as well as being technically up to date – and showing the latest releases!
Club Membership
Club membership is currently about 1200. Most are Aldeburgh residents, but a good proportion come from wider Suffolk and further afield, including London. The Club regularly donates substantial sums of money to the Cinema, and in 2007 we were pleased to contribute to the improvements to the auditorium, the new seating, and the digital equipment in the projection box.
Activities
Although the Club has no remit to choose the regular films shown by the Cinema, we do arrange one-off showings of popular films, classics or local films, which may otherwise not be seen again on the big screen. We also organise annual trips to the Glyndebourne touring opera and the ballet in the Theatre Royal Norwich, as well as wine-tastings, quizzes, afternoon teas, dinners, theatre outings, visits to Suffolk’s manor houses, to gardens and to other Cinemas like the new one at Southwold and the old one at Harwich.
Subscriptions
Subscriptions are £15 per year and our year runs from January to December. Subscriptions are payable from November, and on showing your membership card at the box-office you will receive £1 off the full ticket price. Reductions in the cost of tickets for live transmissions from Royal Opera House, Royal Ballet Company, National Theatre and the Metropolitan Opera House in New York shown in the Cinema, may be reduced for Club members too. You will also receive a monthly mail shot containing not just the Cinema programme, but also details of Club events, and information about local art exhibitions, craft sales, musical and drama events etc.
