Matinées Musicales 3

Sunday 19 March 2017 at 3.00pm

Two centuries ago the greatest pianists of the day appeared together in gladiatorial combat:  Mozart v Clementi, Beethoven v Steibelt, Liszt v Thalberg. In our own time such vulgarities would not be tolerated! However, I worked closely with two of the twentieth century’s finest pianists and this afternoon I am arranging for them to take to the screen in turn, playing concertos and solo works: I’ll attempt to analyse their special qualities but leave you to decide at the end of the day whether one artist can be judged as superior to the other.  From Alfred Brendel’s recitals there will be highlights from Liszt’s impressive Années de pèlerinage and Schubert’s unforgettable late sonatas. Krystian Zimerman will be heard in vintage Chopin; his concerto performances include Beethoven, Bernstein and Brahms. Brendel will be heard in Mozart’s last piano concerto, K595. For anybody who loves romantic piano music this Matinée is a Must!
