A man called ove

Sun 6 & Wed 9 Aug

Director: Hannes Holm.

Starring: Rolf Lassgård, Bahar Pars, Ida Engvoll. Sweden 2015. TBC mins. Swedish/Persian with English subtitles.

With pleasing echoes of Toni Erdmann, Hannes Holm’s Oscar-nominated tale is a whimsical yet moving comedy centred on the eponymous 59 year-old Ove (Lassgård), a recent widower and world-class curmudgeon. After losing his wife, his job and social status in short order, he’s practically given up on life. Wearing an almost permanent scowl, he spends his days aggressively enforcing laughably strict neighbourhood by-laws and chatting sorrowfully to his wife (Engvoll, in flashback) at her graveside. When a boisterous young family, lead by the bubbly Iranian-born Parveneh (Pars), moves in next door, Ove’s negative attitude is put to the test. But their altercations lead to an unexpected friendship, which instils in him a sense of purpose and makes him re-think his approach to life.
