Opera from the New York MET

    Season starts Saturday 9 October 2010

    Starting this October, Aldeburgh Cinema is delighted to launch a new season of operas from the New York MET.

    Kicking off with Das Rheingold on Saturday 9 Ocober at 6pm, the new season is guarenteed to delight both opera lovers and newcomers.

    Das Rheingold - Wagner

    Performance runtime: 3hrs 15mins  

    James Levine; Wendy Bryn Harmer, Stephanie Blythe, Patricia Bardon, Richard Croft, Gerhard Siegel, Bryn Terfel, Eric Owens, Franz-Josef Selig, Hans-Peter König.

    Robert Lepage’s new production of the Ring cycle opens with the prologue to Wagner’s epic drama with Bryn Terfel singing the leading role of Wotan for the first time with the company, heading an extraordinary cast.

    Boris Godunov - Mussorgsky

    Valery Gergiev; Ekaterina Semenchuk, Aleksandrs Antonenko, Oleg Balashov, Evgeny Nikitin, René Pape, Mikhail Petrenko, Vladimir Ognovenko.

    Bass René Pape takes on one of the greatest roles in a production by monumental theatre and opera director Peter Stein, in his Met debut. Valery Gergiev conducts Mussorgsky’s soulful spectacle, which captures the sufferingand ambition of a nation.

    Anna Netrebko returns to the role that made her a Met star.

    Don Carlo - Verdi

    Performance runtime: 5hrs

    Yannick Nézet-Séguin; Marina Poplavskaya, Anna Smirnova, Roberto Alagna, Simon Keenlyside, Ferruccio Furlanetto, Eric Halfvarson.

    Nicholas Hytner (The History Boys, The Madness of King George) makes his Met debut with this new production which was greeted with popular success when it opened in London. Roberto Alagna leads the cast in the title role of Verdi’s most ambitious opera.

    La Fanciulla Del West - Puccini

    Performance runtime: 3hrs 50mins

    Nicola Luisotti; Deborah Voigt, Marcello Giordani, Juha Uusitalo.

    Puccini’s wild west opera stars all-American diva Deborah Voigt in a performance that marks the 100th anniversary of the opera’s world premiere at the Met.

    Iphigénie en Tauride - Gluck

    Patrick Summers; Susan Graham, Plácido Domingo, Paul Groves, Gordon Hawkins.

    Susan Graham, Plácido Domingo and Paul Groves reprise their starring roles in Gluck’s masterful interpretation of the Greek myth.

    Lucia di Lammermoor - Donizetti

    Patrick Summers; Natalie Dessay, Joseph Calleja, Ludovic Tézier, Kwangchul Youn.

    Natalie Dessay returns to her triumphant portrayal of the fragile heroine in the Met’s hit production.

    Le Comte Ory - Rossini

    Maurizio Benini; Diana Damrau, Joyce DiDonato, Susanne Resmark, Juan Diego Flórez, Stéphane Degout, Michele Pertusi.

    Rossini’s vocally dazzling comedy soars with bel canto sensation Juan Diego Flórez in the title role of this Met premiere production. He vies with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, in the trouser role of Isolier, for the love of the lonely Countess Adele, sung by soprano Diana Damrau.

    Capriccio - Strauss

    Andrew Davis; Renée Fleming, Sarah Connolly, Joseph Kaiser, Russell Braun, Morten Frank Larsen.

    Renée Fleming dazzled audiences when she sang Capriccio’s final scene on Opening Night of the 2008-09 season. Now she sings Strauss’s entire diva showvcase, with Andrew Davis conducting.

    David McVicar’s gripping production returns with Patricia Racette, Sondra Radvanovsky and Dolora Zajick conducted by Music Director James Levine.

    Die Walküre - Wagner

    The Met has assembled an extraordinary cast for the second installment of Robert Lepage’s new production of the Ring cycle, conducted by James Levine. Bryn Terfel is Wotan, lord of the Gods. Deborah Voigt adds the part of Brunnhilde to her extensive Wagnerian repertoire at the Met.
